DATUM EXPERIMENT SUBMISSION

WK 3

Wk 3:

task_for_today
1. select one each to use as a precedent for your school. Each students selection should be driven by their developing theory; they should justify this

Theory: Safety and shelter from the fragilities and challenges in their environment, whether that be school stresses or natural (physical) habitat.

Plan used=Zaha Riverside museum

Why did I choose this?
The shape of the entry point of this building reminded me of a ramp. I saw a lot of potential and ideas I could create from this plan that could explore the concept of the bridge.

Mental notes to self:
1. Don't neglect the concept of the bridge.
2. The building is the bridge itself. Of course I can have a literal bridge in the actual building
3. Interpretation of bridge concept: Design a building that can help people travel from one place to another in an efficient and convenient way. therefore circulation is the 'invisible bridge'

2. Spend about an hour modifying, extending, transforming, adjusting or otherwise developing their chosen plan to reflect the spaces required in the brief.

Plan 1 negatives:
1. Wall thicknesses can be changed- don't like how the room was tapered at one end.
2. Organisation of the space was illogical and non-cohesive

Plan 2 negatives:
1.Still had not configured the how big each room needed to be

Plan 3 negatives:
1. Used the bubble diagram method to help me visualise how big each room needed to be to suit it's function.

Plan 4:
1. I could start visualising the plan with the UNSW site
2. Still did not like the organisation of the studio rooms

3.  Use the same plan as above re-imagined as a section to develop their school in 3 dimensions.

Experimenting (stream of consciousness process) to help shape the exterior of my building

independent_study
Complete by the beginning of the next tutorial.

1.
Create a 3 dimensional model of the school in SketchUp following the plan and section designed above.
2. Export the first draft of your bridge/school to Lumion and post 2 images of it to your blog. Upload the plans and sections you used to develop the model.

Birds eye view angle, the building has a beautiful free form shape. However from a human eye perspective, the building looks flat and bulky.

Exterior views

human eye perspective, the building looks flat and bulky. Perhaps add some irregular shaped windows?

Ramps are placed from University mall and Anzac Parade (one each) to enter the school. The ramp width tapers as it arrives the at building entrance. This is a directional mechanism- controlling pedestrian traffic.

Detailing:

The main lecture hall needs to be reshaped. Drawings and diagrams do not reflect the end product.
Small detail added on the roof. It gives the exterior of the building a 3 dimensionality and more interesting shape. From inside, it creates this effect as described ay a light artist James Turrell, ", the viewer's point of view is focused upwards and inevitably lured into contemplating the sky as framed by the open roof". Therefore, this aperture in the roof narrows down the expansiveness of the sky, which creates a sense of focus and tranquility. This relates to my theme-comfort and shelter from the fragilities and challenges in the external environment.

Interior views- looking down atrium from the second level. This allows for a cohesion /'bridging' of the two levels and all the rooms.
